Massachusetts sports betting has operated since Aug. 10, 2022, with seven legal sportsbook apps currently available to residents. The state’s regulatory framework was established when Governor Charlie Baker signed House Bill 5164 into law on Aug. 10, 2022, following national approval of sports betting in 2018.
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission initially licensed retail operators on that date, though the first retail locations did not open until Jan. 31, 2023. Online operators received approval on March 10, 2023, expanding access for bettors who prefer digital platforms over physical visits.
Legal wagering is restricted to individuals aged 21 or older who are physically located within the state at the time the bet is placed. Residents may choose from seven distinct online sportsbooks, each offering different welcome incentives to attract new users. These promotions typically take the form of bet-and-get offers, profit boosts, or deposit matches.
A bet-and-get offer requires users to place a small wager and meet specific objectives to receive bonus funds. Profit boosts increase the payout amount on winning bets, while deposit matches provide a fraction or 100% of the deposited value as a bonus. Users are permitted to register with multiple platforms to compare features and determine which app best suits their preferences.
Three retail locations host licensed sportsbooks for those who prefer in-person wagering. WynnBET operates at Encore Boston Harbor in Everett. BetMGM is located at MGM Springfield in Springfield. PENN Sportsbook is found at Plainridge Park Casino in Plainville.
The state’s strong sporting culture drives significant interest in wagering, particularly on professional teams from the Boston area. The Boston Celtics, Red Sox, and Bruins represent the NBA, MLB, and NHL, respectively. The New England Patriots remain one of the most successful franchises in NFL history. College teams such as Harvard and Boston College also generate substantial betting interest.
However, specific restrictions apply to collegiate wagering. Bettors are prohibited from placing individual player props on college sports. Additionally, wagers on in-state teams are restricted unless the game is part of a postseason or multi-team tournament, such as March Madness. These rules ensure that betting activity aligns with state regulations while allowing participation in major sporting events.
