Three brands and a technology licensing business now define Bose's operating model, a departure from the single-brand product company the Framingham firm ran for 60 years. Chief Executive Lila Snyder, speaking on The Verge's Decoder podcast, confirmed the company has sold Bose Professional, acquired the 75-year-old McIntosh Group and Italian speaker maker Sonus faber (more than 40 years in business), and built an Audio Tech unit that ships Bose algorithms into Motorola handsets, Xreal augmented-reality glasses, Sena motorcycle helmet communicators, Skullcandy headphones, and Epson projectors.
The licensing model and its pricing logic
Audio Tech runs as B2B2C: Bose sells technology to device makers, with the brand license priced separately. The Bose name never appears on a partner product without the underlying technology. Partners can take technology alone or add the "Sound by Bose" or "Powered by Bose" mark; cost differs by engagement. Bose has operated a structurally similar model in automotive for more than 40 years. Audio Tech extends that playbook into mobile, compute, XR, and adjacent categories.
Brand separation and the luxury tier
McIntosh and Sonus faber sit inside a dedicated luxury audio business unit, separated from the core Bose brand. Every product in both lines is handmade. Sonus faber is built around natural materials and Italian craftsmanship. Snyder was clear: no plan to move either brand toward lower price points. Engineering teams for the luxury labels remain partially distinct to preserve sound signatures, though Bose is selectively adding software and connectivity capability to the acquired products. The most recent McIntosh launch is the MA2375 integrated amplifier, a vacuum-tube design Snyder described as a decor object as much as a listening device.
The strategic rationale for entering luxury, per Snyder: audio is materially underrepresented in the luxury goods market relative to automotive, hospitality, fashion, and leather goods. Luxury buyers purchase history and heritage, which made acquisition more sensible than building a new brand.
The platform-level R&D shift
Audio Tech forced a rebuild of Bose's research structure. Previously, technology was developed purpose-built per product. The company now builds common platforms and AI-based processing modules portable across both its own products and partner hardware. Snyder named three technology franchises driving the work: noise cancellation, immersive lifelike audio, and a capability the company calls "hearing what you want." The platform approach is producing R&D efficiency while expanding what Bose engineers are asked to invent. The current external deployment list: Motorola handsets, Xreal augmented-reality glasses, and Sena motorcycle helmet communications hardware.
