Ten episodes is the full run Prime Video has ordered for Blade Runner 2099, the sci-fi series that received its first public teaser at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday. The project traces to an announcement by Ridley Scott nearly five years ago, when he disclosed plans for a television spinoff of the 1982 Blade Runner and its 2017 sequel, Blade Runner 2049.
Cast and creative team
Showrunner Silka Luisa joined stars Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer onstage at Comic-Con for the reveal. Luisa's prior series credit is Shining Girls. Beyond the publicly released teaser, an exclusive clip was screened for the in-room audience at the convention and was not made available externally.
Luisa told Entertainment Weekly the show holds to the source material's "noir principles" and that a mystery anchors the narrative, one that moves "both forwards and backwards in terms of mythology."
Premise: humans lose, then become the hunted
The 2099 setting inverts the power dynamic of the source films. An uprising has taken place. The humans lost, and they are now the hunted second-class citizens of this world. Luisa framed the stakes plainly: "The show is really imagining what comes after us, and what does it mean to be human in a world where humanity is no longer relevant."
Three streaming reveals at the same Comic-Con
The Blade Runner 2099 teaser arrived alongside two other reveals at Comic-Con on Friday. Prime Video also debuted a teaser for the third season of Rings of Power. HBO screened a new trailer for Lanterns. Of the three, Blade Runner 2099 carries the longest documented development runway at nearly five years from Scott's initial announcement to first footage.
