Medicare this week began covering GLP-1 drugs prescribed for weight loss, a policy shift that makes millions of Americans newly eligible for the benefit.
The program had previously limited GLP-1 coverage to patients diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, or elevated cardiovascular risk tied to a prior stroke or heart attack.
The Diagnosis Gate That Has Now Lifted Until this week, a Medicare enrollee could access GLP-1 coverage under one of three qualifying diagnoses only: Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, or documented stroke or heart-attack risk.
Patients whose primary condition was obesity — without one of those concurrent diagnoses — had no coverage pathway through the program for the drug class.
