The revenue case rests on one player
Caitlin Clark's arrival generated a measurable increase in viewership, merchandise sales, and fan interest across the league. The gain was large enough for WNBA players to bargain for improved benefits and perks, a concrete result no prior season produced. The WNBA has never turned a profit in its operating history.
The league's visible posture toward Clark and toward her Indiana Fever teammate Sophie Cunningham has been antagonistic. Cunningham publicly stated that male athletes should not compete in women's sports. Opposing players and coaches wore shirts opposing her position. Anti-Cunningham rallies formed at stadiums. The Seattle Storm's official social media account celebrated player opposition to her remarks.
Carrington foul and co-owner suspension
Chicago Sky forward DiJonai Carrington received a flagrant 2 foul and ejection after contact left Cunningham with a bloodied face. Carrington posted "white privilege" from the locker room and tagged the Indiana Fever's account.
Cunningham said the contact was intentional. "Clearly, I think it was like unnecessary. I've never really spoken to her and have no beef with her, but I guess she has some pent up stuff," she said. "Yeah, it's intentional."
Cunningham's coach described Carrington as a physically tough competitor and said the neck contact was unintentional.
