$118.2 million in net sales for the six months ended July 31, 2026 marks a 6.1% year-over-year decline for Virco Mfg. Corporation (NASDAQ: VIRC), the largest domestic manufacturer and supplier of moveable educational furniture for the preschool-through-12th-grade market, as cautious district spending weighed on volume during an uncertain school budget cycle. Second-quarter revenue of $87.5 million accounted for the bulk of the first half, implying a first-quarter figure of $30.7 million. Gross margin held at 40.0% for Q2 and 40.4% year-to-date, a sign that pricing discipline absorbed some of the volume pressure.
The income compression
The operating income drop runs wider than the revenue miss. H1 operating income fell to $6.9 million from $15.3 million, while SG&A widened 140 basis points to 34.5% of revenue from 33.1% a year ago. Interest expense was flat at $0.3 million through six months. Q2 net income came to $8.6 million, a 15.4% decline from $10.2 million in the prior year; through six months, net income was $5.8 million versus $10.9 million, down 46.5%. The current ratio of 2.5 gives the company room to invest without stretching the balance sheet.

The combined shipments-plus-backlog figure of $162.5 million came in 2.1% below the year-ago mark. Management attributes the shortfall to cautious ordering ahead of new public school budgets, which typically run July 1 through June 30. Post-approval demand data show a slight recent uptick in orders, though management cautions that lower second-half seasonal volume is unlikely to close the gap at the full-year level. Q2 operating income of $10.5 million, while down from $15.4 million a year ago, remains above the company's stated long-term average for the period.
CapEx push and the dividend
Virco's annual capital expenditures budget of $4 to $6 million, per management guidance, is expected to absorb new spending on what the company calls "platform processes": tube mills, panel processing, injection molding, and metal finishing. The company operates U.S.-based fabrication from one facility in Torrance, California and three in Conway, Arkansas, a model management says delivers cost control and the flexibility to reduce reliance on debt. Efforts are targeting adjacent markets where domestic production costs may, the company suggests, be nearing parity with overseas suppliers, a shift management expects could take several years to materialize in full. Chairman and CEO Robert Virtue noted that 40% of Virco's workforce has been with the company for more than 20 years. The board declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.025 per share on September 3, 2026, payable October 9, 2026 to shareholders of record as of September 18.
