Tim Hardaway Jr. has agreed to a $6.5 million contract to join the Miami Heat, marking his sixth NBA franchise and a return to his hometown. The deal slots him as a perimeter shooter alongside the soon-to-be formally acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo — but one jersey number will remain off-limits: his father's retired No. 10.
The Retired Banner, the Family Rule
Tim Hardaway Sr.'s No. 10 was retired by the Heat in 2009, capping a tenure that began when the franchise acquired him in a trade from the Golden State Warriors, where he had spent six-and-a-half seasons. During his Miami years, Sr. finished fourth and sixth in MVP voting, earned one All-NBA First Team selection, and added two All-NBA Second Team honors. The Heat won their fourth championship four years after his departure, with Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O'Neal leading the roster.
Sr. addressed the number question directly on WQAM radio in Miami. "My legacy is my legacy," he said. "That is not coming down from the rafters." He expressed clear pride in his son — noting that Jr. has accomplished three things he never did: reaching the Final Four, winning an NBA championship, and playing for his hometown team — but did not waver on No. 10.
A Crowded Locker Room: The Jersey Inventory
Hardaway Jr. has worn No. 10 at three of his five previous NBA stops. At the Heat, his other familiar numbers are also blocked:

The signing returns the Hardaway name to Miami in an active capacity for the first time since Sr.'s playing days. Jr. arrives as one of the shooters the Heat are assembling around Antetokounmpo, whose formal acquisition remains pending. The number on Jr.'s back will be new; the one in the rafters above him is already spoken for.
