The NFL may suspend Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Keenan Allen after he was charged with two misdemeanors stemming from a drunk driving arrest. Allen faces preliminary charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (OVWI) and OVWI endangering a person, both classified as misdemeanors in Indiana. Per Yahoo Sports, Allen had a blood alcohol level of .224 when arrested, a figure nearly triple the legal limit of .08. In Indiana, this high level constitutes a higher Class A misdemeanor.
The arrest violates the NFL's substance-abuse policy. Under the league's Collective Bargaining Agreement, a minimum three-game suspension follows such a violation. A longer suspension could be in play given the degree of intoxication. Reports indicate the NFL is waiting on Allen's legal proceedings before issuing a formal suspension.
With an attorney conference expected on Oct. 26, the suspension could arrive mid-season. Allen remains eligible to suit up for the Colts in their Week 2 contest against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football. In the previous week, the 34-year-old caught six passes from Daniel Jones for 32 yards in a 41-23 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
This is Allen's first season with the Colts after signing a one-year deal this off-season, marking his 14th NFL season. He spent 12 seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, including a reunion last year where he caught 81 passes for 77 yards and four touchdowns. The year prior, Allen played with the Chicago Bears during the 2024 campaign.
