$6,000 is what Graham Platner's Democratic Senate campaign paid for the background check that failed to surface the scandals that ended his bid, a source familiar with the early campaign told Fox News Digital. A complete candidate review typically runs to tens of thousands of dollars. Platner raised over $16 million in contributions between July 2025 and June 2026 and never commissioned an upgraded check, raising questions the campaign has not answered.
Three days, no candidate interview
The review was limited to three days, controlled by political staffers Dan Moraff and Morris Katz. A source with knowledge of standard candidate vetting told Fox News Digital that nobody asks for just three days of research. The same source described the normal sequence: an initial triage product is almost always followed by a comprehensive or more thorough document. That follow-up never came.
The vetting firm contacted the campaign multiple times after the initial pass, each time flagging that concerning information had surfaced and that additional review was needed. The campaign ignored those callbacks. Staff also blocked investigators from interviewing Platner, a restriction that further limited what the three-day window could produce.
The firm's work did surface some of Platner's now-deleted Reddit posts, later reported by the Wall Street Journal. It also turned up information casting doubt on his blue-collar image. Moraff told the Journal the report captured some posts, not all.
What the check missed and what the press found
Platner's DUI, his relatively affluent upbringing, and the Nazi-linked tattoo he acquired during military service were all discoverable through public information and later reported by press outlets. The campaign's stated reason for the abbreviated check: insufficient funds at the outset of the race.
The $16 million question
Platner became one of the strongest Democratic fundraisers in the country, pulling over $16 million in contributions from July 2025 through June 2026. The campaign never returned to commission a full review once those resources were available.
Platner suspended his campaign on Wednesday after a former girlfriend accused him of rape, then filed the formal withdrawal paperwork on Friday. Democrats in Maine are now convening to select a replacement ahead of the July 13 statutory deadline. The Platner campaign, Moraff, and Katz did not respond to Fox News Digital's requests for comment.
