Atlassian CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes argues that the so-called SaaSpocalypse is not occurring, asserting that AI will increase the need for business process visibility rather than eliminate the category of software that provides it. Speaking from Australia to The Verge, Cannon-Brookes stated that while artificial intelligence will automate specific steps within business workflows, it will not replace the human judgment required to manage complex organizational processes.
Cannon-Brookes described Atlassian as a platform that connects business and technology teams to manage work, noting that products like Jira and Trello serve as a reference for work rather than the workspace itself. He explained that AI agents will handle routine tasks, such as processing standard sales exceptions, but complex decisions still require human intuition. This dynamic, he said, increases the volume of work and the need for tools that allow managers to understand what is happening across an organization at scale.
To illustrate why AI will not render enterprise software obsolete, Cannon-Brookes cited the history of bank branches. Although mobile banking led to initial closures around 2000, the number of branches has increased over the last decade. He attributed this growth to a shift in branch services toward higher-level customer support and complex processes, a model he believes will apply to knowledge workers and enterprise software. He argued that as AI handles simple tasks, the bar for competition in industries like healthcare and finance will rise, leading to more knowledge workers and developers, not fewer.
Atlassian currently employs between 12,000 and 13,000 people globally, operating under a "Team Anywhere" policy where approximately 60 percent of staff come to an office at least three days a week. The company is structured functionally with matrixed product groups and a large platform team, with well over half of its research and development focused on the core platform rather than individual applications. Cannon-Brookes noted that customers hire Atlassian as a platform to get work done across their entire business, not for single applications.
The CEO highlighted the company's new web browser, Dia, which he said is used daily by 96 to 97 percent of Atlassian employees. He described Dia as the best browser for knowledge workers, reflecting the company's focus on design consistency and user experience. Cannon-Brookes also pushed back on claims by Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince that AI would eliminate measurement roles, emphasizing that human judgment remains central to business operations. He stated that Atlassian runs entirely on its own platform to manage large-scale goals and investments, using its Strategy Collection to track performance across the organization.
