$12.9 billion is the reported price Nvidia is prepared to pay for Hugging Face, the AI model repository that occupies a role in machine-learning workflows similar to what GitHub holds for conventional software.
The deal, if it closes, would give the hardware giant direct ownership of the platform where developers and researchers find, download, and share AI models.
Hugging Face operates as a cloud-based repository for AI models, among other services. A developer or researcher searches the platform for a model that meets certain criteria, pulls it down, and runs it.
They fine-tune the model into a specialized variant and upload it back to Hugging Face, where others can find and use it in turn.
