$12 million on the clock: Bryce Underwood on notice after Michigan's 13-12 opener

A reported $12 million NIL deal, at $4 million per year, did not insulate Bryce Underwood from a public warning on Monday.

Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham told reporters the sophomore keeps the starting job following the Wolverines' 13-12 escape over Western Michigan, then attached a qualifier: the position is "not something that's infinite." The game turned on one second.

Underwood's first Hail Mary attempt sailed out of the back of the end zone as time appeared to expire. Officials reviewed and restored one second to the clock.

His second attempt found wide receiver JJ Buchanan for the winning touchdown. Michigan's home crowd drew notice for rushing the field after a one-point win over a directional school.
